Hero Dog Box Review: December 2013

The Hero Dog Box is a brand new pet subscription box that Jade and I got to try out recently. We received the December Hero Dog Box, which got here just in time for Christmas. We were traveling during the holidays so arrived home to find this wonderful box of goodies waiting for us.

Tail Bangers Original Bangers ($10.18, full size 8 oz bag): These are shaped like bones and are covered in a white frosting with festively colored sprinkles. This is Jade's absolute favorite treat of the box, she is crazy for the frosting. They have all natural ingredients and they are just so cute. This really made me especially love the way that Hero Dog Box curates the box because it was so absolutely ideal for the holidays, really showed some thought went into the fact that this was a December box.

Paw Street Bakery Blueberry Bone-Anza Treats ( 4 oz, retail $7.99): These are totally organic treats with just four ingredients. They are kind of like granola for doggies, super crunchy and plenty of oats and blueberries in there. Jade enjoyed these although they take a second place to her beloved Tail Bangers.

Honest Kitchen Scrumptious Quickies Stocking Stuffer Treats ($9.99, 2 oz): Another super adorable holiday themed inclusion! These are tiny bite sized treats that are made from fish, and yes they have that pungent smell. Jade loves, super loves, fish treats and since I love her I have learned not to sniff the container and hand them out. This would have been perfect for her stocking this year, my fault for being out of town when it arrived.

Lovin From the Oven Peanut Butter & Apple Treats ($8.99 retail, 9 oz): These are really cute because they're shaped like hearts. I know, they taste the same to Jade either way but the cute shapes are just fun for the owner! These are softer treats that Jade probably likes almost as much as her top pick for the box.

Eco Owl Buddy from Honest Pet Products: (retail $16.99, 10 inch size): The Eco Owl Buddy is made from 100 percent natural sustainable Hemp canvas, is non-toxic, lead free, chemical free, and is hand made with care by disabled adults in the Green Bay, WI area. This is such a darling toy! Jade carries it around as a "lovey," a snuggle toy that she also uses as a pillow/head rest when she tires of tossing it about.

Jade says that the Eco Owl Buddy can double as a pillow! I loved the fact that Hero Dog Box made sure to send the right size for my dog (the toy comes in several sizes, and Jade got the big size for dogs over 50 lbs.)

Honest Pet Products Honest Clean Pet Shampoo: (retail $2.49, 2 oz size): This is a pure and gentle castile soap for dogs. I'm looking forward to trying this out. Jade has quite sensitive skin and it looks like the ideal shampoo for her. She's not excited for a new shampoo, truth be told. But Jade is not a fan of baths in general. She is being well compensated for future baths by this awesome Hero Dog Box full of goodies, however!

The thing that really stands out about Hero Dog Box is their mission of helping dogs in need find their forever homes: Each month, the box sponsors a shelter or rescue dog (this month it was Willow, who is at Aussie Rescue in San Diego. She's a beautiful double merle Aussie mix who is deaf and partially blind. Her photo was in the box, along with a message that each box helps contribute.) This is AWESOME! I've also noticed that Hero Dog Box welcomes suggestions of shelters that need support, so you never know what dog may turn up as the sponsored pup in the future.

The box comes in three sizes: Small (0-20 lb,) Medium (20-50 lb,) and large (50 plus lb, the size you see in this review.) 
The Hero Dog Box is $29/month if you go month to month, but you can get greatly reduced prices by buying longer subs. A 3 month sub comes out to just $24/month and a 6 month sub comes out to just $19/month. 

This month's box was worth around $60, a fantastic high value, and they were all extremely high quality pet products that I did not hesitate to feed my princess Jade.
